How non-explosive rock fragmentation actually works
The physics are simple: we drill a hole pattern of calculated diameter and depth into the rock or concrete mass, then fill the holes with a chemical expansive agent — typically calcium-oxide based. When the agent reacts with water, it expands with a force reaching several thousand tonnes per square metre.
Because the holes are arranged along a defined line, the expansive stress concentrates there, producing a fracture that follows the drilled pattern precisely — with no explosion, no shockwave, and no perceptible vibration at close range. That's what makes it a safe alternative to conventional blasting in sensitive locations.
Timing matters: the reaction typically takes anywhere from a few hours to a full day, depending on ambient temperature and agent type. Project scheduling needs to account for this, particularly on tight-timeline works.
